POLS are enclosed residential clusters which ensembles vernacular architecture. In today’s terms called as row-houses, where each house is attached to the other through common walls with a central open space, connecting the whole community. These Pols were built in the 17th century during Mughal-Maratha rule and stand as a legacy of Ahmedabad’s history of successive invasions.
Due to urbanization and lack of maintenance these heritage houses have started to degenerate. However, Heritage departments along with house owners are working towards restoring these buildings in Ahmedabad.
Let us have a look at the beautiful architecture of a Pol House, through Jagdip Mehta’s Heritage Home. Mr. Mehta has not only put his heart and soul in restoring his old heritage building but also been letting people experience the uniqueness of the structure, by conducting cultural events at his residence. His house is an active venue for artists and visitors who have interest in Indian heritage and culture.
The house has 100 sqm. ground area and 260 sqm. built-up area. It was critically unstable with the entire wood-work severely infested by termites, demanding immediate repair or replacement. Mr. Mehta availed the loan facilitated by HUDCO and AHC subsidy to initiate the restoration work of the house, which was done in collaboration with Heritage Department (AMC) and French Government.
About the House Design:
The entire structure of the House stands on wooden beams, pillars and roof structure. The balcony and the pillars have carvings of geometrical designs or the designs of flowers or sculptures. The upper floors have overhanging balconies and windows, casting a complete shadow on the streets below, maintaining a cool atmosphere through the hot days. Each house was built on a water reservoir. The water tank in-return kept the structure cool and Thick walls provided the resilience.
Mr. Jagdip Mehta has recieved “GIHED” (Gujarat Institute of Housing & Estate Developers) Award for the best maintained Heritage House in Ahmedabad. He can be contacted here > http://heritagehouseinahmedabad.blogspot.in/
